Orlando: Family Fun in the Florida Sun
There may be no more popular family vacation spot than Orlando, Florida. Whether you want to spend weeks in the theme parks or have a quiet getaway in spas and on golf courses, Orlando has what you're looking for to create the vacation you'll never forget.
- The Weather: It's nicknamed "The Sunshine State" for good reason. Visitors can expect the sun to shine almost every day, with maximum heat - and rain - in the months of June through September. The other nine months of the year are much drier and see more moderate temperatures. That said, there really isn't a bad time to travel to Orlando!
- The Theme Parks:All of Orlando's major theme parksare within a radius of 15 miles of the city. Disney heads the lineup of attractions with the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, its Animal Theme Park and Epcot Center. If you prefer theme parks with water, Orlando's are open year 'round and feature SeaWorld Orlando, Wet 'n Wild,Disney's Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach, not to mention Aquatica. If you'd like to have dinner with Mickey, Minnie, or any of the other famous Disney characters, you can! They're a popular group - we'll have to make your reservations early - but anyone can enjoy dinner with a major Disney character at Walt Disney World Resort.
- The Sports: Orlando is home to two major sports teams, the National Basketball Association's Orlando Magic and Arena Football League's Orlando Predators. Though Orlando does not have a major league baseball team, it traditionally plays host to Major League Baseball's spring training camps every year.
- The Great Outdoors: Orlando is a wonderland for outdoor activities, with golf topping the list. With over 70 golf courses within fifteen miles of the center of the city, it's a veritable haven for golfing enthusiasts. If golf isn't your thing, you might visit Gatorland, a reptile habitat which is home to over 3,000 alligators and 80 crocodiles. The Harry P. Leu Gardens has been called the "hidden gem" of the city, and Lake Eola Park features miles of trails along the lakeside for invigorating walks.
- Shopping: Veteran bargain hunters come to Orlando just to shop at Premium Outlets Orlando. This outlet chain has 2 locations in the city at opposite ends of International Drive. Between them they offer over 300 stores and shops! If you're more of a mall person, don't miss The Mall at Millenia, featuring the area's only Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale's. The area's largest mall is The Florida Mall, sporting over 250 stores and a hotel right on site! If hip boutiques and trendy shops are more your style, you won't want to miss a walk down Park Avenue in nearby Winter Park. Antiques shoppers will love "antiques row" on Orange Avenue near downtown Orlando, as well as Renningers Antiques Center. It's only open on weekends, but it has over 180 shops!
